The Drifters, Inc. was conceived in Waco, Texas in 1954. By December, the first chapter was established in Chicago. During the next two years, chapters were organized in Louisville, Indianapolis, St. Louis, New York and Greater Kansas City. The first and founding convention of The Drifters, Inc. was hosted by the Chicago Chapter at the Sheraton-Chicago Hotel from October 11-13, 1957.
Over the years, The Drifters, Inc. continues to be in the public focus – not only because of our unique charitable, civic, and social involvement – because we continue our on-going commitment to serve as role models and to enhance the universal image of womanhood in the cities where we reside. We have 32 Chapters throughout the United States.
The Drifters, Incorporated were recently featured in Ebony Magazine, August 2011 edition, in article by Adrienne Samuel Gibbs called "Invitation Only". It discusses and highlights several 'invitation only' national civic organizations, including the The Drifters, Incorporated. The article includes quotes with National President Lisa Johnson-Tonkins and former National President Yvonne Johnson in the article. Way to go Drifters!!
Congratulations to Montclair, New Jersey Drifters on their 50 year anniversary!
